Juvéderm™ and Juvéderm Voluma® Injections

Hailey, Brody, Casey & Wray, M.D., P.C.

Juvéderm™ injectable gel is a hyaluronic acid dermal filler that helps to instantly restore your skin's volume and smooth away facial wrinkles and folds. Juvéderm is available in two formulations that allow our physicians to tailor your treatment and address your specific needs. Juvéderm Ultra is used to correct most superficial facial wrinkles. Juvéderm Ultra Plus is a more robust formulation, intended for contouring deeper folds.

Juvéderm is injected into the skin using a fine needle to temporarily fill in and augment the treatment area. Most patients need one treatment to achieve optimal wrinkle smoothing, and the results last about 6 months.

Juvéderm, unlike previous dermal fillers, can smooth thin areas in the skin with little risk of reaction. It's also the first FDA-approved hyaluronic acid dermal filler that has proven its safety and effectiveness in persons of color. Studies with Juvéderm showed no increased risk of hyperpigmentation or hypertrophic scarring in patients of color.

Most side effects are mild or moderate in nature, and their duration is short lasting (7 days or less). The most common side effects include, but are not limited to, temporary injection site reactions such as redness, pain/tenderness, firmness, swelling, lumps/bumps, bruising, itching, and discoloration. As with all skin injection procedures, there is a risk of infection.

Like Restylane® and Perlane®, Juvederm can be used simultaneously with collagen and BOTOX Cosmetic for enhanced results. Our dermatologists will advise you which combination of fillers is best for your needs.

Juvéderm Voluma®

Juvéderm Voluma satisfies a need for volumizing the cheeks to restore support for the lower face in addition to the upper face. The results are independent of using fillers elsewhere on the face and of lifting procedures. Certainly the combination of all these procedures can be recommended for some persons. However, the advance in this product is in the longevity and in the innovative injection techniques, which require anatomical knowledge unique to dermatologic surgeons as well as other cosmetic physicians and surgeons. Taking a three-dimensional approach to the face now is a significant advance over what we could do prior to 2013. Deflation of the cheeks due to aging can now be corrected and improve results in skin rejuvenation.

Several factors are responsible for deflational aging. The remodeling and thinning of the skull causes receding of the cheekbones, and the midcheek fat pad thins and sinks due to gravity. Fillers stimulate collagen as well, and this can be an additional benefit.

Our goal is to avoid the chipmunk-cheeks from too much filler, which is a common error. More is not always better.
